The ICF Code of Ethics is the very foundation … the backbone … of the work we do as ICF Professionals. Yet the ethical scenarios we face as coaches aren’t always black and white. There’s an awful lot of “gray" that can be open to interpretation!
-Do you understand the limits of confidentiality?
-Are you clear on how to manage potential conflicts of interest?
-What if you notice the client isn’t getting as much value out of coaching as they once did? What do you do?
-Are you clear on what you’d do in situations that skirt the edges of ethical dilemmas?
Anne Kelly, your Ethics training facilitator, describes our Ethics learning design and format:
“In a pre-class assignment coaches are asked to review the updated ICF Code of Ethics, for at least 5-10 minutes. Coaches arrive at the group meeting ready to share two or more parts of the Code that they find interesting. This participant-led focus gives us our agenda when we meet for our exploration of ethics, touching on as many identified topics as time allows.
The format for Ethics sessions is very interactive and uses a variety of media. After our opening overview of which aspects of the code each participant identified as interesting, we include a “tour” of the ICF website to review the breadth of ethics-specific resources available for members. I shine a light on the most relevant resources using our participant-driven agenda. I typically address questions on the spot throughout, in a fluid discussion.
I track and display the results of the ICF annual IRB Ethical Conduct and Compliance Report. Groups find the visual pie charts of violations and trends over the years to be helpful. While reviewing trends in coaching ethics I build links to the importance of a strong Coaching Agreement, sprinkling the session with gems of wisdom I heard while volunteering on the ICF Ethics Education team for a year, revising the 3-hour online course to reflect the 2019 Code of Ethics.
The single biggest takeaway from my past offerings of Ethics training has been a sprint to review their Coaching Agreements, say the majority of coaches. For this reason, our 3 hours of ethics training is followed by an in-depth look at each coach’s written coaching agreement and its various policies.”
Takeaways from this event include:

2. Apply 3 simple tips an ICF Ethics expert recommends to all coaches
3. Locate and Recognize multiple Ethics Resources available to ICF coaches
