“Deeper Coaching: How to Help Clients who are Successful yet Stuck, Stressed or Depressed” with Sharon Carroll, MA, MBA, BCC, LPC and Lori Banks, MA, CLC, PCC

The World has always changed…but now, that change seems to be accelerating. In 2022, The Collins Dictionary’s word of the year was “Permacrisis”. Permacrisis means an extended period of instability and insecurity. Since Covid-19 and the global pandemic, our normally stressed environment has become even more overwhelming for many. Collectively, we are struggling. And Futurists say there is more change to come, with up to 42 major paradigm shifts on the way, including Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and other technological changes. As people struggle to adapt to these changes, we are seeing deep divisions and conflicts between generations, in families, in marriages, in friendships, and the workplace. Even normally successful people are struggling to adapt. And those who are doing well are often carrying the stresses of others in their environment. Some of these stresses include aging parents, reactions to social media, technology challenges, addictions, distractions, misinformation, emotional dysregulation, and more! Sadly, even the most successful and open-minded are now often living in a reactionary mode (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn). The current change and stress in the world mean that more people are reacting rather than responding, and this shows up in our coaching sessions. So, how do we deal with the state of these clients?

In the past, distinctions between coaching and therapy were clearly defined. Two Black Boxes. Now there is more of a blend, a collaboration, where one might push up against the other without crossing boundaries. For example, what to do with a depressed, but not clinically depressed, client whose depression is a clear hindrance to meeting career goals? Then there’s anxiety and overall stress. According to the National Institute of Health, an estimated 31.1% of U.S. adults will experience an anxiety disorder (clinical or not) at some time in their lives. So, the odds are strong that anxiety and stress show up in the coaching arena. Is anxiety impacting work relationships, feelings of adequacy, motivation, and energy? How does that impact the coaching process and what difference is needed to help clients meet their coaching goals?

Finally, as the general population gains comfort in and is more open-minded about dealing with mental health issues, clients may expect different responses from their coaches. How do we honor client needs and maintain the professional boundaries that define our profession? We believe there is a need for and value in exploring what these changes mean for each of us.

Tonight’s discussion will be interactive and will give you some insight and ideas on how to deal with situations when they come up.
