Thinking and behavioral patterns occur on multiple levels for most of us. Often, we focus on the context of our present moment and how that might need to change. Paradoxically, this is also the most superficial level, and outside our locus of control. If this were easy, we would not be discussing its significance.

Evoking awareness in coaching involves exploring current ways of thinking while also supporting the client to move beyond those patterns. This means asking questions that go beyond “the what” and “the how” and moving toward “the who.” How are your clients relating to a situation or their goals on various levels? At the deepest level, it may also involve exploring the purpose behind it all.

Building on the work of anthropologist Gregory Bateson, Dilts' Levels of Change offers us a framework for exploring human behaviour and experience across different dimensions of life, from the physical environment we inhabit to our sense of purpose and connection to something larger than ourselves.

Our bodies hold information about how we experience the world. Somatic coaching uses bodily sensations, movement, and posture to support awareness and learning. In this workshop, we explore Dilts' Levels of Change through a somatic lens.

Participants will move physically through the different levels and will be invited to pay attention to what is arising in their thinking, emotions, body sensations, and overall sense of perspective. They will be asked open-ended questions throughout the process, followed by some guided inquiry and reflection.

After the experiential portion, we will discuss the theoretical foundations of Dilts' Levels of Change, how that connects with somatic awareness, and aligns with ICF core coaching competencies.

Finally, we will explore how coaches can integrate this approach into their own practice, including ways to adapt the process for different coaching contexts

Key Takeaways

Practical application: Through somatic interventions across coaching contexts, coaches will help their clients recognize situational shifts, have fuller coaching conversations and increase psychosocial awareness.

Global perspective: Like coaching, somatic work transcends countries and cultures because it engages universal aspects of the human experience. While individual responses may vary across cultural contexts, the awareness generated through the process can support meaningful insight and growth across diverse coaching environments.
